Hervey Bay - Coastal Lifestyle, Natural Beauty and a Growing Community
Located on Queensland’s beautiful Fraser Coast, Hervey Bay combines a relaxed coastal lifestyle with the services and facilities of a growing regional city.
Known for its calm beaches, whale watching, access to World Heritage-listed K’gari and an outdoor lifestyle centred around the water, Hervey Bay attracts families, retirees, visitors and people relocating from larger metropolitan areas.
With established residential communities, new housing developments and continued investment in local infrastructure, Hervey Bay also offers opportunities for people looking to buy a new home, relocate to the Fraser Coast or invest in the region.
HERVEY BAY LOCATION
Hervey Bay is located on Queensland’s Fraser Coast, approximately a 3½-hour drive north of Brisbane.
The city stretches along the protected waters of Hervey Bay, with nearby K’gari helping create the calm coastal environment for which the area is well known.
The waterfront Esplanade connects a number of popular beaches and coastal suburbs and features parks, playgrounds, walking and cycling paths, cafés, restaurants and recreational areas.
THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN HERVEY BAY
Living in Hervey Bay provides plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors throughout the year.
Popular activities include swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, sailing and walking or cycling along the waterfront.
The Hervey Bay Esplanade is one of the city’s defining features and provides easy access to beaches, parks, picnic areas, playgrounds, cafés and restaurants.
Other popular local attractions include Urangan Pier, WetSide Water Park, Reefworld Aquarium, the Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens and the Hervey Bay Historical Village & Museum.
The wider Fraser Coast also provides access to natural attractions including K’gari, national parks and a variety of coastal and marine environments.
WHALE WATCHING IN HERVEY BAY
Hervey Bay is internationally recognised for its humpback whale encounters and has become one of Australia’s best-known whale-watching destinations.
From around July to October, humpback whales spend time in the sheltered waters between Hervey Bay and K’gari during their annual migration.
Unlike locations where whales simply pass along the coastline, the sheltered waters of Hervey Bay provide a place where whales can rest, socialise and, later in the season, mothers can spend time with their calves.
Whale-watching tours operate from Hervey Bay during the season and have become one of the Fraser Coast’s most recognised visitor experiences.
K’GARI – FORMERLY FRASER ISLAND
World Heritage-listed K’gari, formerly known as Fraser Island, is located just off the Fraser Coast and is easily accessible from the Hervey Bay area.
The world’s largest sand island is renowned for its freshwater lakes and creeks, ancient rainforest, sand dunes and long stretches of beach.
Its close proximity provides Hervey Bay residents and visitors with convenient access to one of Queensland’s most distinctive natural environments.
EDUCATION IN HERVEY BAY
Hervey Bay offers a range of state and independent primary and secondary schools throughout the city and surrounding suburbs.
Higher education is also available locally through the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Fraser Coast campus in Hervey Bay.
Having primary, secondary and tertiary education available locally can be particularly appealing to families considering a permanent move to the area.
A GROWING REGIONAL CITY
Hervey Bay has developed considerably over the years while retaining much of the relaxed coastal lifestyle that has long attracted people to the region.
New residential communities continue to be developed throughout Hervey Bay, including areas such as Eli Waters, Nikenbah, Wondunna and surrounding suburbs.
Continued population growth brings demand for additional housing, transport, community facilities, health services, retail and other infrastructure.
Significant recent investment includes the new Hervey Bay Community Hub in Pialba, which opened in August 2026 and incorporates the library, Council services, community facilities and a Disaster Resilience Centre.
An $18 million upgrade of the Hervey Bay Airport terminal is also underway, with the project designed to improve passenger capacity, accessibility and facilities as the region continues to grow.
HOUSE AND LAND IN HERVEY BAY

These properties may appeal to families, owner-occupiers, people relocating to the Fraser Coast and investors looking for new residential property in the Hervey Bay market.
A PERSONAL NOTE ABOUT HERVEY BAY
Our family moved from Sydney to Hervey Bay over 30 years ago because we wanted to raise our four children in a safe, relaxed coastal community.
Hervey Bay gave our family the lifestyle we had hoped for. Our children were able to grow up close to the beach, enjoy the outdoors and complete their primary, secondary and university education locally.
Having lived in the area for many years, we have seen Hervey Bay grow and develop while retaining much of the relaxed coastal lifestyle that first attracted us here.
For our family, moving to Hervey Bay was one of the best decisions we made, and our own experience of living here is one of the reasons we enjoy helping other people discover what the area has to offer.
